The Science Behind the Wave
- Underwater turbines are designed to capture kinetic motion of the ocean tides.
- We can predict the rise and fall of tides as they follow a cyclic fashion.
- Tidal energy produces electricity and other forms of power by using water
- Tidal energy does not require any fuel to run.
- Cost of construction is high but maintenance costs are relatively low.
- Amount of power produced so far has been small, but production is still in it's infancy stage.
- China, France, England, Canada, and Russia have much more potential to harness this type of energy.
The Three Types
Tidal Streams- fast-flowing body of water created by tides
Turbines- machine that takes energy from a flow of fluid
Barrages- uses a large dam. Water can spill over the top or through turbines in the dam because the dam is low.
